Gor Mahia Edges Shabana in Gusii Stadium in a Game that is Return Marred by
Fan Violence
May 4th, 2025, Kisii, Kenya
Footballing history was made today as Gor Mahia FC and
Shabana FC clashed at the Gusii Stadium for the first time in fifteen years.
However, the highly anticipated match, which saw Gor Mahia secure a narrow 1-0
victory, was overshadowed by widespread fan violence both before and after the
final whistle.
A Look at the Teams:
|
Gor Mahia FC, affectionately known as "K'Ogalo"
or the "Green Army," boasts a storied legacy as one of Kenya's most
successful and popular football clubs. Founded in 1968, the club has a rich
history of domestic dominance, having clinched numerous Kenyan Premier League
titles and FKF Cup trophies. Their passionate fanbase is renowned for its
unwavering support. Current notable players for Gor Mahia include Samuel
Osoo, Alpha Onyango, Omala Benson, and Austin Odhiambo. These players have
been instrumental in the club's recent performances and were key figures in
today's victory. |
Match Day Mayhem:
The atmosphere leading up to the 4:00 PM EAT kickoff was
electric, with anticipation reaching fever pitch. However, disturbing reports
began emerging as early as two hours before the game. Eyewitness accounts
describe chaotic scenes as large numbers of fans from both sides attempted to
enter the stadium, leading to a dangerous stampede as some desperate
individuals jumped over the stadium walls to gain access. Tragically, several
fans were trampled in the process.
Even before the first whistle, clashes erupted between
supporters outside the stadium, with reports of fans pelting each other with
stones. The allocated seating arrangement, which designated the G1 to G9
sections for Shabana fans and the G10 to G13 sections for Gor Mahia supporters,
was reportedly disregarded by both sets of fans, further fueling the tension
and contributing to the pre-match disorder.
Gor Mahia's Solitary Strike Ignites Post-Match Violence:
The match itself was a tightly contested affair, with Gor
Mahia ultimately securing a 1-0 victory. However, the final whistle served as a
trigger for a significant escalation of violence. Allegations from Gor Mahia
fans suggest that while they entered the stadium unarmed, Shabana supporters
were allegedly armed with knives, rungus (traditional clubs), and pangas
(machetes).
The clashes intensified immediately after the game, with opposing fans engaging in violent confrontations. Police responded swiftly, deploying tear gas in an attempt to disperse the warring factions and restore order. However, the fighting reportedly continued for nearly 30 minutes, with tear gas met by a barrage of stones thrown by the agitated fans. The stadium infrastructure was badly damaged and adjacent offices were broken into with the windows shattered. Stones were strewn all over the stadium, including numerous shoes left by fans as they ran for cover. Meanwhile, the blame game continued with each team blaming the other for the mayhem.
Casualty Toll and Aftermath:
The extent of the violence is deeply concerning, with a
significant number of injuries reported. According to various sources, a total
of 72 people sustained injuries and were rushed to different medical facilities
across the region. Kisii Referral and Teaching Hospital received the highest
number of casualties, with 52 injured fans admitted. An additional 14 were
taken to Ram Hospital, 5 to Hama Hospital, and one individual was transported
to Christamarian Hospital.
Disturbingly, unconfirmed reports from some sources indicate
that one person may have died as a result of the injuries sustained, while
another is said to be in critical condition with severe head injuries.
Authorities have yet to officially confirm these reports.
The events at Gusii Stadium on sunday 4th May 2025 cast a dark shadow over the return of this historic fixture. While the focus should have been on the footballing action after a long hiatus, the day will unfortunately be remembered for the unacceptable levels of violence and the significant number of casualties. Police investigations are expected to be underway to determine the root causes of the mayhem and to bring those responsible to justice. The incident raises serious questions about security measures at football matches and the urgent need for increased efforts to promote peace and sportsmanship among fans.
